The wolf

Since a few years, wolves have again become established in the Netherlands. We are also dealing with the wolf in our municipality. We are learning to live together with the wolf. This is necessary because the wolf is protected by law.

The wolf

Leven met de wolf

The wolf creates a richer nature with more biodiversity in its habitats. The carcasses it leaves behind are put to good use by all kinds of scavengers. Think of various insects, but also, for example, the raven and the fox. Deer (prey animals of the wolf) also stay on their guard and therefore do not stay in the same place for long. As a result, they graze less in the same place and plants can develop. So the wolf is good for biodiversity.

Wolves and people

The wolf is very shy and cautious. It does not see humans as prey. Do you encounter a wolf? Then follow the following advice:

  • respect the wolf;
  • do not approach the wolf, but slowly distance yourself;
  • do not feed the wolf;
  • if the wolf comes too close: speak loudly and make gestures;
  • if you have a dog with you: leash the dog and if possible put the dog between your legs.

Wolves and dogs

The entire municipality of Renkum is considered a wolf habitat by the province. Wolves generally do not come near dogs as long as people are around, but beware: dogs are intruders in the eyes of the wolf. That is why it is important that dogs are kept on a leash, on the paths, under supervision and in good spirits.
